If he spoke lashon hara and mixed in something false, even just a little, he breaks (Shemos 23:7), "Keep far from a false word." His status also changes: he is now a "motzi shem ra" - someone who gives a person a bad name - and his punishment is much more severe than that of a regular speaker of lashon hara and rechilus.
