Hilchos Rechilus, chapter 8, section 2 3
Also, if someone praises a person in front of another, in a case where the other will become upset with him because of it, and this will cause harm to the one who was praised — it seems that this is included in rechilus.
So one must be careful not to praise Reuven in front of his partner Shimon, or a wife in front of her husband, for the good they did for him — for example, that they lent him money, or paid his wages on time. The partner might get angry that the worker was paid, because maybe he did not want to pay. Sometimes this causes the partner real loss.
In the same way, a husband might be upset that his wife spends his money too freely. So it is forbidden to praise in such a case, because of avak lashon hara.
Also, one must be careful when asking a friend for a favor and the friend answers that he cannot do it. He should not push and say, "Why did you do the favor for so-and-so? He told me himself!" In such a case, the friend is often angry at the person he helped, for telling people about the favor he did for him.
