Hafetz Haim Halachot
Halacha 209 / 215

Illustrations paragraph 5

One must be very careful of the bad habit of speaking badly about one side of a match to the other side, about things that have nothing real in them. For example, if the groom is a simple, honest person who does not understand people's tricks, or does not joke around like other young men his age, right away they spread it around town that he is a fool and naive — until sometimes the match is cancelled because of this. And there are many more bad things like this. "May Hashem cut off all smooth lips" for this.

These people are not only speakers of lashon hara. The Torah calls them motzi shem ra (spreading a false bad name), because it is a lie. And even if it were completely true, all the details would still be needed in order to tell it.

In the same way, going and speaking badly about one side because of what their parents did is also included in lashon hara.
